KHAYAL (moodboard): If Chikankari embroidery is Poetry on Textile, then Jaali stitch is its Evocative Drama!! Jaali is an exceptionally brilliant optical illusion created on fabric by the hands of the karigars, where they replicate the trellis pattern of windows. Windows through which the first rays of sunshine sieve and enter a dark room, and spread their warmth in an alluring pattern. Windows through which the silver glow of a full Moon, enters in a cosmic colour play of calmness. Jaali has more spiritual connect with the artisans than we can think; maybe this is what makes the stitch the high point of Chikankari art.

KHAYAL (moodboard): Lucknow has its own way of naming various colours; a colloquial shade chart, if you will. No one says Pink or Hot Pink over there, but we have grown up hearing names like Roohafza Gulaabi, Gajari, Rani and Gulkandi, for various shades of Pink. As soon as someone would say Gulkandi, the mind would immediately travel to the sweetness of the indigenous condiment in Paan, or in summer shakes. There was a particular, brillinat Pink shade of Gulkandi shake, that made us name this dupatta in its memory. Luckhnavis pay more attention to the feel evoked by a colour's name, than its literal accuracy. This is why Lucknow has its own way of calling shade names, which are also mentioned by the city's historian, late Padmashree Dr Yogesh Praveen ji, in his books.
POSHAAK (about the garment): This brilliantly pink Dupatta has 2 motif play of antique miniature peacock, and jasmine flower in an interplay upon the buttery Chanderi fabric. The dupatta is locked using a ghaspatti & shadow bel on all 4 sides. It has a generous smattering of Mukaish embroidery, that makes it look even more beautiful.
The dupatta has stitches like Orma, Ghaspatti, Hool, Phanda, Murri stitch in the Peacock motif alone!! The jasmine flower has stitches like Keel, Kangan and Ghaspatti.
It is a beautiful wrap that will not be limited to be worn on Indian wear only, but can be taken on classic black coloured gowns or jumpsuits as well.

Handloom Chanderi fabric
KHAYAL (moodboard):Elizabeth Bennett is the central protagonist of Pride & Prejudice (1813), a legendary classic by Jane Austen. She is one of the five lovely Bennett sisters, & is now considered amongst the greatest heroines of English Classic Literature. Elizabeth is "second only to Jane in beauty & countenance", yet her most endearing aspect is her cynicism tempered with her sweet nature. With all the traits that Jane has & keeps each separate from the other, Elizabeth's character is a beautifully aligned composition of each one of them in a neat & witty package. This is why this buttery Chanderi Dupatta has three diverse colours of Pink, Yellow & Blue in one Motif, that symbolises Elizabeth the best, & as an evolved version of Jane.
POSHAAK (about the garment): This dupatta is a grander version of Elizabeth Dupatta made by us sometime ago. The butter white Chanderi drape has a fusion of 3 unique miniature motifs, the Bijli boota in big & small size, and a miniature leaf petal boota. 3 soft pastel shades - Sky Blue, Lemon Yellow and Rose Pink, create each motif, even the most miniature one. The dupatta is closed on 4 sides with a shadow & ghasspatti bel in two colours.
The Bijli motif has 3 unique hand cutworks in one motif - Bijli, Jaali & Hathkati!! It is simply astounding how much detailing one motif can hold.
It is a beautiful wrap that will not be limited to be worn on Indian wear only, but can be taken on classic white gowns or jumpsuits as well.

KHAYAL (moodboard): Lucknow has its own way of naming various colours; a colloquial shade chart, if you will. The shade chart of the colour Green you can get in Lucknow's own lingo, are endless. Dhaani, Elaichi, Khus, Panna, Aam Pana, Jaljeera, Pistai...phew the list is endless. As soon as one would refer to a Pistai colour for even textiles, the mind would wander to the sweetness of Pista Kulfi, that brings immense joy in harsh summer months, and that feeling propels to shop window for the colour that is evocative towards the said memory. Luckhnavis pay more attention to the feel evoked by a colour's name, than its literal accuracy. This is why Lucknow has its own way of calling shade names, which are also mentioned by the city's historian, late Padmashree Dr Yogesh Praveen ji, in his books.
POSHAAK (about the garment): This moon like glowing Chanderi dupatta has Sea Green Resham Chikankari allover, with a fusion of two miniature motifs, the Paatra (leaf), and Champaa flowers. A generous smattering of Mukaish daana makes the dupatta glow with a wondrous & celestial light. KHAYAL (moodboard): Champaai is a coloquial and beautiful colour name for White, and is commonly used in Lucknow's language. Champaai is used to describe anything that is beautiful, soft & pristine white, like Champa flowers. This word has been often used to describe lovely feet of ladies or their glowing complexion, by the poets of Lucknow; on the other hand, it has also been used to describe the all White on White Chikankari attire worn by a lady of society, who further decorates herself with pearls and diamonds. Her clothes are then called "Champaai Joda" (all white ensemble). While it could be said "Safed Joda", calling it Champaai makes it even more poetic, & shows appreciation for the styling done by the lady. This was the inspiration behind this soft jewel of a dupatta.
POSHAAK (about the garment): This moon like glowing Chanderi dupatta has White Resham Chikankari allover, with a fusion of two miniature motifs, the Paatra (leaf), and Champaa flowers. A generous smattering of Mukaish daana makes the dupatta glow with a wondrous & celestial light. The dupatta is perfect to wear with an all white attire or any colour attire. This is one shade & look that will be a classic hand me down, and one where you cannot go wrong.

POSHAAK (about the garment): The Antique Ambi motif is a Century plus old motif. The Jaali work on this motif is done using Qasab or Zari filament, which is the toughest level of Jaali stitch done on any fabric. KHAYAL (moodboard): Deepmala translates to a "Garland of Diyas" or Earthen lamps, one of the most therapeutic and energising sights of Deepawali festival. There is not one soul who can say that the lit rows of Diyas with their soulful flame does not invoke a sense of calmness, positivity, love and joy. It is one of those moments of joy that is not ephemeral. Do you know why? Because the silent flame of the Diya makes you realise that this is how your Aatman is inside your Body. The realisation brings the relativity & connectivity!! We wanted to capture the glow of Diyas on a Diwali night through a Mukaish creation, and here we did it through DeepMala.

KHAYAL (moodboard): Have you ever seen Lucknow's famous 500 plus year old dessert recipe, Malai Gilauri? For those who have not, it is Malai or Khurchan cooked over hours, that is removed from the sides of a paan, when cooled down. The layer of cooked Malai is then decorated with many beautiful condiments - pistachios, almonds, sugar, kewra water - before rolling into a Gilauri. The process just before making the Gilauri is a beautiful sight. This motif with the finest stitches of most beautiful & complex embroidery, and Jaali stitch, reminds us of the Gilauri, just before getting folded and bound into a mouthful of sweet bliss.
POSHAAK (about the garment): This dupatta has 3 Malai Gilauri motifs along the centre length, making it look full, yet not overwhelming, so that the extremely beautiful Gilauri motif looks clutter free and neat, resting upon delicate Organza. KHAYAL (moodboard): Jane Bennett is a character in Pride & Prejudice (1813), a legendary classic by Jane Austen. She is one of the five lovely Bennett sisters, & is another underrated character. She has all the characteristics of a classic heroine - beautiful, calm, composed, gentle, kind with a need to see good in everyone - yet she is more of a non central protagonist in the book. Many readers find Jane very placid & simple, yet I see many character traits in Jane that are tied up better in her dearest & closest sister, Elizabeth. Jane just knows how to keep one trait apart from another. This is why this buttery Organza Dupatta with same motif in three diverse colours of Pink, Yellow & Blue symbolises Jane the best.
POSHAAK (about the garment): Natural White Handloom Organza Dupatta with pure tested Gold & Silver Zari borders, embroidered with delicate Bijli Boota re created by Meiraas from an archived block. This block has 3 master cutwork stitches in one motif - Hool, Jaali & Hathkati along with other with stitches like Phanda, Orma & Shadow. It is a rare masterpiece!
Imp: Colours may vary a bit, although they are all shot professionally in studio set up & closest colour has been photographed; Any variation can be due to digital medium of photography that is outside our control.

Golden Trellis is our heirloom collection of Mukaish work that was historically done once upon a time in Awadh region, but is not done any more. Golden Trellis is a result of, one of the many research projects we are working upon simultaneously. We know some might not see light of the day (although we firmly believe that everything can be revived if we just have the right patience and the will to keep going), some will prove to be false tales - a mirage of a narrative built for dramatic value and nothing more...but some, like Golden Trellis will be a reality that can be translated to fabric yet again, even if in a small way, or a shadow of its one time glory...at least there will be a start.
Golden Trellis is part of the Art & Antiquities Project undertaken by Meiraas. The Sustainability Quotient (TSQ):
Heritage Mukaish work re created: This work comes under Kamdani Embroidery. The name we have given to this particular style is "glasswork", after we got our Amer saree designed in same stitch. This is due to the fact, that we get it especially rubbed in ghutaai process to get the metal wires to shine like molten glass (we wanted the molten glass painting look of Amer Fort art). This is extremely dexterous work and is done on miniature motif style to ensure its wearability on multiple occasions, instead of it being relegated for very few. This work was historically done in Lucknow. What can be better sustainability than finding out a lost artwork in a craft & helping revive it again to wearable pieces, & most importantly in pieces that can be part of today's Heritage Builders' private collection; this will ensure the craft's continued sustainability.
Mukaish Hand Embroidery with proper "ghutaai" - this means Mukaish embroidery has been rubbed using old technique of filling pebbles in a bottle and rubbing on the embroidery, instead of new age roller press method. This one method ensures long lasting Mukaish. In itself Mukaish is more sustainable craft that sequins or "salma sitaara" embroidery, as Mukaish never comes off, maintaining the look of the garment for much longer time.
KHAYAL (moodboard): Poetry etched in fabric, Golden Trellis alludes to the once opulent courts of the ancient royalties of India. Trellis is the jaali like window pattern, a signature architecture in heritage monuments of the Golden Era. This museum quality piece of legacy bound, wearable art will a pride for any one who owns it.
POSHAAK (about the dupatta): Handloom Pure Organza Dupatta embroidered beautifully with the rare & precious Swarna Chakra or Golden Diskette. This beautiful Swarna Chakra has very neat & delicate Kamdani work closed with a ring embroidery; the miniature embroidery is allover the dupatta. A historic dupatta, that will always be the pride of the owner & will remain as part of handpicked private collection.

POSHAAK (about the dupatta): Pure Organza Silk Dupatta embroidered beautifully with the rare & precious Golden Kairi (Paisley). This is a very complex embroidery where Mukaish wires are embroidered one on top of another to make a mesh trellis patten & is then interlocked within a ring. The back of this dupatta (3rd image) leaves the onlooker startled with the dexterity that would have been employed. It is like "weaving" embroidery within the fabric! Even in this miniature motif, the craftsmanship is unbelievable. A historic dupatta, that will always be the pride of the owner & will remain as part of handpicked private collection.

Heritage Mukaish work re created: This work is known as Gukhru work. It has not been done in India or is extremely rarely done anymore. This is overlapping meshed Jaali work done in Mukaish. Its karigars are not alive now, and some of the karigars who learnt this art do not work in India. This was re created when one of them came on a small visit to his family in India. He has taught some amount of work to our small group of artisans in Lucknow. This work was historically done in Lucknow only.
POSHAAK (about the dupatta): Pure Organza Silk Dupatta embroidered beautifully with the rare & precious Jugnu or Glowing Firefly design. This is a very complex embroidery where Mukaish wires are embroidered one on top of another to make a mesh trellis patten & is then interlocked within a ring. Even in this miniature motif, the craftsmanship is unbelievable. A historic dupatta, that will always be the pride of the owner & will remain as part of handpicked private collection.

KHAYAL (moodboard): Elizabeth Bennett is the central protagonist of Pride & Prejudice (1813), a legendary classic by Jane Austen. This is why this buttery Organza Dupatta with three diverse colours of Pink, Yellow & Blue in one Motif symbolises Elizabeth the best, & as an evolved version of Jane.
POSHAAK (about the dupatta): Natural White Handloom Organza Dupatta with pure tested Gold & Silver Zari borders, embroidered with delicate Bijli Boota re created by Meiraas from an archived block. This block has 3 master cutwork stitches in one motif - Hool, Jaali & Hathkati along with other wtitches like Phanda, Orma & Shadow. It is a rare masterpiece!
