Golden Trellis is our heirloom collection of Mukaish work that was historically done once upon a time in Awadh region, but is not done any more. Golden Trellis is a result of, one of the many research projects we are working upon simultaneously. We know some might not see light of the day (although we firmly believe that everything can be revived if we just have the right patience and the will to keep going), some will prove to be false tales - a mirage of a narrative built for dramatic value and nothing more...but some, like Golden Trellis will be a reality that can be translated to fabric yet again, even if in a small way, even if a shadow of its one time glory...at least there will be a start.
Golden Trellis is part of the Art & Antiquities Project undertaken by Meiraas.
The Sustainability Quotient (TSQ):
Heirloom Full Jaal Mukaish: While Mukaish as a craft has mostly now become an embellishment to Chikankari, we at Meiraas have been trying consistently, to introduce this beautiful craft in all its individual glory, & in more heritage yet functional ways to wear it, to increase the longevity and heirloom value of each piece. Mukaish Jaal Dupattas on Silk are stand alone Heirloom Dupattas, that are versatile to be paired with any Kurta.
Mukaish Hand Embroidery with proper "ghutaai" - this means Mukaish embroidery has been rubbed using old technique of filling pebbles in a bottle and rubbing on the embroidery, instead of new age roller press method. This one method ensures long lasting Mukaish. In itself Mukaish is more sustainable craft that sequins or "salma sitaara" embroidery, as Mukaish never comes off, maintaing the look of the garment for much longer time.
Handspun Handwoven Tussar Silk: Thigh reeled, Handspun, Handwoven soft Tussar Silk from the looms of Bhagalpur, Bihar has been used as a base for these dupattas.
KHAYAL (moodboard): Poetry etched in fabric, Golden Trellis alludes to the once opulent courts of the ancient royalties of India. Trellis is the jaali like window pattern, a signature architecture in heritage monuments of the Golden Era. This museum quality piece of legacy bound, wearable art will a pride for any one who owns it.
POSHAAK (about the dupatta): Handloom Tussar Silk Dupatta embroidered beautifully with the Trellis (jaalidaar window) Pattern Mukaish (Chheenta Mukaish) all over & finished with Gold kingri gota lace detailing (not visible in images) on the daaman of the Dupatta. The dupatta shade is natural beige colour of Tussar yarn. It is a beautiful Heirloom piece that works perfectly well standalone with any Kurta - Chikankari, Banarasi, Plain Tussar, Chanderi, etc. This one dupatta is versatile to dress up and down and adds the elegance that only Heirloom Pieces can. A perfect hand me down too.
Imp: This dupatta is natural Tussar beige colour. If you want this coloured to a shade of your choice, then drop us an email at namaste@meiraas.com

KHAYAL (mood-board):Paan, the rarely used, yet as significant a symbol of Awadh's iconography. The broad spectrum of Paan (Betel Leaf) provides platform for artistry, which ancient artisans used to fill with mystique & romance through their skilled artwork.
POSHAAK (about the outfit): Handloom Tussar Silk stole embroidered with Antique Chikankari with Betel leaf or Paan motif. A beautiful souvenir from the Handloom & Handicraft Industry of India.
Antique Masterclass Jaali Chikankari Hand Embroidery Dupatta on handwoven Organza with Ganga Jamuna borders of Tested Zari Gold & Silver on either side.
The Sustainability Quotient (TSQ):
Masterclass Jaali stitch work using Zari filament, which is extremely difficult to do.
Sustaining highest quality of Jaali stitch as centrepiece, which is almost vanishing from the craft or getting replaced with sequins and cutdana.
Very fine resham taar Chikankari done with immense detailing inside the motif
Handwoven Pure Organza Silk with tested Zari borders of Gold & Silver, making it a Hand embroidered and Hand Woven wholesome piece of wearable art.
KHAYAL (moodboard): Have you ever seen Lucknow's famous 500 plus year old dessert recipe, Malai Gilauri? For those who have not, it is Malai or Khurchan cooked over hours, that is removed from the sides of a paan, when cooled down. The layer of cooked Malai is then decorated with many beautiful condiments - pistachios, almonds, sugar, rose water, gulkand - before rolling into a Gilauri. The process just before making the Gilauri is a beautiful sight. This motif with the finest stitches of most beautiful & complex embroidery in Pink & Peach, and Jaali stitch, reminds us of the Gulaab Gilauri, just before getting folded and bound into a mouthful of sweet bliss.
POSHAAK (about the garment): This dupatta has 3 Gulaab Gilauri motifs along the centre length, making it look full, yet not overwhelming, so that the extremely beautiful Gilauri motif looks clutter free and neat, resting upon delicate white Organza. A subtle stunner!! Small floral bootis accompany this one of a kind dupatta.
Important: You can email us at namaste@meiraas.com if you wish to plan a Kurta with this dupatta.

KHAYAL (moodboard): Jane Eyre (1847) is an English Classic Novel penned by Charlotte Bronte under her pseudonym Currer Bell. Jane Eyre is an extremely moving story of an orphan who, despite the bleakness of her situation in life, aspires & hopes to find life, light & love, and eventually through her own journey finds everything she wished for. Her chance for hope is symbolised by lemon yellow embroidery (colour of hope), against the coldness of white. This dupatta is Jane Eyre.
POSHAAK (about the dupatta): White Handloom Kota Dupatta embroidered with stark lemon yellow delicate Tepchi Chikankari in floral pattern. Last image is taken against a backlight.
Imp: Colours may vary a bit, although they are all shot professionally in studio set up & closest colour has been photographed; Any variation can be due to digital medium of photography that is outside our control.

KHAYAL (moodboard): Elizabeth Bennett is the central protagonist of Pride & Prejudice (1813), a legendary classic by Jane Austen. She is one of the five lovely Bennett sisters, & is now considered amongst the greatest heroines of English Classic Literature. Elizabeth is "second only to Jane in beauty & countenance", yet her most endearing aspect is her cynicism tempered with her sweet nature. With all the traits that Jane has & keeps each separate from the other, Elizabeth's character is a beautifully aligned composition of each one of them in a neat & witty package. This is why this buttery Organza Dupatta with three diverse colours of Pink, Yellow & Blue in one Motif symbolises Elizabeth the best, & as an evolved version of Jane.
POSHAAK (about the dupatta): Natural White Handloom Organza Dupatta with pure tested Gold & Silver Zari borders, embroidered with delicate Bijli Boota re created by Meiraas from an archived block. This block has 3 master cutwork stitches in one motif - Hool, Jaali & Hathkati along with other wtitches like Phanda, Orma & Shadow. It is a rare masterpiece!
Imp: Colours may vary a bit, although they are all shot professionally in studio set up & closest colour has been photographed; Any variation can be due to digital medium of photography that is outside our control.

Handloom Kota Doria: A rarity in itself now. We came upon this batch with great difficulty as most of the Kota available now in market is not handwoven.
KHAYAL (moodboard): Catherine Earnshaw is one of the central characters of Wuthering Heights (1847), an iconic & solo work of Emily Bronte. Wuthering Heights is tumultuous, raw, untamed, complex. While many readers feel that is a symbolism of its male protagonist, Heathcliff, I have always felt that the wild English moors of this novel symbolise Catherine, its female protagonist. I felt Heathcliff reacted to everything that was Catherine. Catherine is extremely complex; raised to be a lady & aspiring to be one too, she however loves untamed wildness. The intricate jaal work of this dupatta and its creamy sophistication alongside, makes us name it Catherine.
POSHAAK (about the dupatta): Cream Handloom Kota Dupatta embroidered with delicate full jaal tone on tone Tepchi Chikankari in floral & paisley pattern. Last image is taken against a backlight. The crochet lace detailing in cream colour is a signature style of Meiraas & adds to the character of the dupatta.

Rare Hand Embroidery: We have focussed on finding rare & very old motifs belonging to actual Regency Era that were used in Chikankari back then. This is one of those miniature old motifs that otherwise is never visible in Chikankari. When wearing this motif you are wearing a piece of History. Please see our founder's IGTV "The Building Blocks" for more details.
Handloom Kota Doria: A rarity in itself now. We came upon this batch with great difficulty as most of the Kota available now in market is not handwoven.
KHAYAL (moodboard): Bronte's World - Bronte's World refers to the three sisters of Classic English Literature scene - Charlotte, Emily & Anne. The three were less celebrated & underrated authors. Charlotte wrote Jane Eyre and Shirley; Emily wrote the magnetic & solo Wuthering Heights; Anne was further underrated amongst the trio & wrote Agnes Grey and the now iconic The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. While set near about three decades after Austen, Bronte sisters explored a bleaker take of English countryside. The setting is more or less same, but where Austen's World is cheerful & simple, Bronte's World is untamed, bleak & raw with hope for sunshine. Blue & Yellow embroidery thus made perfect sense to symbolise Bronte's World.
POSHAAK (about the dupatta): White Handloom Kota Dupatta embroidered with a 250 plus year old motif in our workshop that did not look inspired by any local flora icon that is commonly used. The two tone embroidery is done in Powder Blue & Butter Yellow.

KHAYAL (moodboard): Austen's World - Set in Regency Era, Austen's World refers to the classic books written by English Author, Jane Austen. The world she creates is a lilting melody that celebrates the small happiness of the usual life. There is sunshine, English gardens, summer balls, love, heartbreak, a clever dichotomy of aspiring middle class English society & the upscale Aristocracy reaching out for a humble approach to life. Pink & Yellow floral motif on soft white gossamer Kota fabric symbolises Austen's sunshine World.

KHAYAL (moodboard): Emma (1815) is an English Classic penned by the legendary Jane Austen. Emma Woodhouse's World is carefree, full of peachy youth, an eagerness to help and fix everyone's problems and as a result create more problems. Austen's writing exposes a very different English society, one that is more simple & relatable to the slice of every day life. Emma's adorable character traits made us name this Peach dupatta after her.
POSHAAK (about the dupatta): Peach Handloom Kota Dupatta embroidered with delicate tone on tone Tepchi Chikankari in floral pattern of unique Meiraas Motif created in 2017. Last image is taken against a backlight. The crochet lace detailing in peach colour is a signature style of Meiraas & adds to the character of the dupatta.
