SUSTAINABLE MEIRAAS CHIKANKARI KHAYAL (moodboard): Ruskin Bond's novella "A Flight of Pigeons" is set in Shahjahanbad, Uttar Pradesh, during India's first recorded War of Independence against British Raj in 1857. The story, though a love story in the intent, is a lot more than that. It is a beautiful story of camaraderie in such bleak times between English women who are left as survivors of an aftermath, & extreme kindness & compassion they end up sharing with Indians where they take shelter. The friendship between "Kothiwali" an aging matriarch & Mariam, the English lady is lovely. The Cotton Frock, Aamramanjari, is an ode to this friendship & hence is made in a style that passes for both Indian & English. Aamra Manjari or Mango Blossoms is the name given to the beautiful embroidery, as that belt of Uttar Pradesh is dominated by rows and rows of Mango plantations. Just like the tender & joyous blossoms, the friendship of women in this story is unassuming, under rated, yet most beautiful. POSHAAK (about the outfit): Aamra Manjari Cotton Frock is made on Soft Pure Cotton. This frock is part of our artisan skill set improvement project, & the full collection took 1.5 years plus to get made. The front ghera (flare) is heavily embroidered with Mango Bark, the bust is done up with minimal flower & bel boota. The back has one statement Aamra Manjari motif & rest has small scattered flowers. It is a beautiful dress to be worn in any weather & any occasion - work, beach holiday, fort holidays, home working. It can be dressed up as a Kurta and dressed down as a tunic on the beach. Khayal (moodboard): When creating this dress, we wanted to delve into the very functional old school tailoring, that is rare to find now. This is a fine Jacket style front open Kurta dress. The style is borrowed from Achkan worn by Nawab Aristocracy in the old days. The design is made more contemporary & has been reimagined for women. The embroidery has minimalist and antique sensibility, with focus given to fine quality craftsmanship. Mother of Pearl buttons add a regal grace to this dress. Poshaak (about the garment): The old school tailored Linen Achkan Dress, has front open styling. The Resham Chikankari has been done in a V shape on the front with two colour threads - White & Firozi. This has been done to bring out the beauty of the work & material both. The back has an antique Paan motif that can be found in antique research books of the craft. It is a truly a travel back in fashion times, but with a contemporary twist. The stitching of this Achkan Kurta was perfected after numerous trials. It has been heavily researched & antique masterclass stitching expertise has been revived for it, so that it fits all body types, especially Indian. The button patti has a broad strip of fabric on the inside of the kurta to provide full coverage & comfort in any posture. Jaali is an exceptionally brilliant optical illusion created on fabric by the hands of the karigars, where they replicate the trellis pattern of windows. Windows through which the first rays of sunshine sieve and enter a dark room, and spread their warmth in an alluring pattern. Windows through which the silver glow of a full Moon, enters in a cosmic colour play of calmness. Jaali has more spiritual connect with the artisans than we can think; maybe this is what makes the stitch the high point of Chikankari art. POSHAAK (about the garment): This bright yellow dupatta has 2 antique Chikankari motifs - Paan and Chaand. Both motifs have very intricate detailing inside them. The bootas are placed on diagonal ends of the dupatta, & the body is filled with 3 miniature motif cluster all through. KHAYAL (moodboard): Lucknow has its own way of naming various colours; a colloquial shade chart, if you will. No one says Pink or Hot Pink over there, but we have grown up hearing names like Roohafza Gulaabi, Gajari, Rani and Gulkandi, for various shades of Pink. As soon as someone would say Gulkandi, the mind would immediately travel to the sweetness of the indigenous condiment in Paan, or in summer shakes. There was a particular, brillinat Pink shade of Gulkandi shake, that made us name this dupatta in its memory. Luckhnavis pay more attention to the feel evoked by a colour's name, than its literal accuracy. This is why Lucknow has its own way of calling shade names, which are also mentioned by the city's historian, late Padmashree Dr Yogesh Praveen ji, in his books. POSHAAK (about the garment): This brilliantly pink Dupatta has 2 motif play of antique miniature peacock, and jasmine flower in an interplay upon the buttery Chanderi fabric. KHAYAL (moodboard): Champaai is a coloquial and beautiful colour name for White, and is commonly used in Lucknow's language. Champaai is used to describe anything that is beautiful, soft & pristine white, like Champa flowers. This word has been often used to describe lovely feet of ladies or their glowing complexion, by the poets of Lucknow; on the other hand, it has also been used to describe the all White on White Chikankari attire worn by a lady of society, who further decorates herself with pearls and diamonds. Her clothes are then called "Champaai Joda" (all white ensemble). While it could be said "Safed Joda", calling it Champaai makes it even more poetic, & shows appreciation for the styling done by the lady. This was the inspiration behind this soft jewel of a dupatta. From Queens like Maharani Gayatri Devi, who wore much subtler version and colours of these, to legendary singers like Begum Akhtar who wore deeper & richer colours, albeit simple Mukaish, but done allover..to Bollywood heroines of that era who wore much heavier Mukaish (as most films were black & white and they wanted embroidery to show even in that camera), the timelessness of Mukaish embroidery in that era inspired these sarees. Even then, most of these sarees were made on Pure Georgette fabric to give a luxurious fall. POSHAAK (about the saree): This lovely deep wine coloured saree has Mukaish hand embroidery all over. The palla has the Meiraas Exclusive motif of Kabootarbaazi (Flight of the Pigeons), in a flight pattern on the palla. Meiraas Bestseller Chikankari design since its first launch in 2018, the Power of Silence, Dance of the Cranes motif has been one of our most requested motifs. This is a Chikankari Kurta made on Handloom Chanderi with Rose and Pistachio embroidery. The Sustainability Quotient (TSQ): 1. Skilled Resham Hand Embroidery on absolutely novel motif art. 2. Exclusive Dance of the Cranes Meiraas motifs carved following all processes. 3. Handloom Chanderi 4. Conceptual Chikankari work, that might someday be housed in a museum of crafts, or a well researched coffee table book. KHAYAL (mood-board): The outskirts of the historic & charming city of Lucknow are equally beautiful in their rustic charm. These ancient Indo Gangetic plains are lush with greenery & boasts of one of World's oldest agrarian civilisation. Watching the emerald landscape of Awadh is a surreal experience, even more so in winters when dotted with the migratory bird population, the most notable of these being the Siberian Cranes, that never enter the city Lucknow, but stay just outside, especially in Nawabgunj Bird Sanctuary. With this concept in mind, we wanted to design motifs that glide in the night sky in a Yin & Yang appeal; we found the desirable art style of these motifs, very surprisingly, in Japan. The ancient Japanese Art style is dramatically circular in design, & it is here that we found our serendipity, the right manner to display the Nawabgunj Cranes. The motif of Chikankari is an exclusive design of Meiraas launched in 2018. Borrowing from Japanese palette, we designed the motifs keeping Chikankari stitches in mind, that best romance the gliding flight of the Siberian Cranes. POSHAAK (about the dress): The cranes are falling, gliding, flying & finally in a circular Dance of Love at the statement back, in this Meiraas Exclusive Kurta made on Handloom Chanderi. The pastel pink Kurta has embroidery in fresh green colour, making it a unique pastel on pastel play Kurta. The Kurta is accompanied by a Dupatta in Handloom Organza fabric with Gold and Silver Zari Ganga Jamuna borders. The Dupatta has a stunning Crescent Moon motif with Cranes flying atop it in two diagonal konia, and floral bootas allover the body.
