Golden Trellis is our heirloom collection of Mukaish work that was historically done once upon a time in Awadh region, but is not done any more. Golden Trellis is a result of, one of the many research projects we are working upon simultaneously. We know some might not see light of the day (although we firmly believe that everything can be revived if we just have the right patience and the will to keep going), some will prove to be false tales - a mirage of a narrative built for dramatic value and nothing more...but some, like Golden Trellis will be a reality that can be translated to fabric yet again, even if in a small way, or a shadow of its one time glory...at least there will be a start. Golden Trellis is part of the Art & Antiquities Project undertaken by Meiraas. The Sustainability Quotient (TSQ):

Heritage Mukaish work re created: This work is known as Gukhru work . It has not been done in India or is extremely rarely done anymore. This is overlapping mesh Jaali work done in Mukaish. Its karigars are not alive now, and some of the karigars who learnt this art do not work in India. This was re created when one of them came on a small visit to his family in India. He has taught some amount of work to our small group of artisans in Lucknow. This work was historically done in Lucknow only. What can be better sustainability than finding out a lost artwork in a craft & helping revive it again to wearable pieces, & most importantly in pieces that can be part of today's Heritage Builders' private collection; this will ensure the craft's continued sustainability.
Mukaish Hand Embroidery with proper "ghutaai" - this means Mukaish embroidery has been rubbed using old technique of filling pebbles in a bottle and rubbing on the embroidery, instead of new age roller press method. This one method ensures long lasting Mukaish. In itself Mukaish is more sustainable craft that sequins or "salma sitaara" embroidery, as Mukaish never comes off, maintaining the look of the garment for much longer time.

KHAYAL (moodboard): Poetry etched in fabric, Golden Trellis alludes to the once opulent courts of the ancient royalties of India. Trellis is the jaali like window pattern, a signature architecture in heritage monuments of the Golden Era. This museum quality piece of legacy bound, wearable art will a pride for any one who owns it. POSHAAK (about the dupatta): Pure Organza Silk Dupatta embroidered beautifully with the rare & precious Golden Kairi (Paisley). This is a very complex embroidery where Mukaish wires are embroidered one on top of another to make a mesh trellis patten & is then interlocked within a ring. The back of this dupatta (3rd image) leaves the onlooker startled with the dexterity that would have been employed. It is like "weaving" embroidery within the fabric! Even in this miniature motif, the craftsmanship is unbelievable. A historic dupatta, that will always be the pride of the owner & will remain as part of handpicked private collection.

The Memoirs of the Maharani of Jaipur, by Gayatri Devi The above reference is to Jaipur's own Pink, that is akin to the flower of Kaner. India has so many unique colours, that it can make its own shade chart & inspire a variety of embroideries & art. This was the thought that shaped the Jaipur Pink saree, with lattices embroidered in Jaali Mukaish to pay our homage to the breathtakingly gorgeous city of the Rajputs. POSHAAK (about the saree): Jaipur Pink saree is an ode to Maharani Gayatri Devi's observation of Jaipur City. This soft cloud like Organza Saree is dyed a soft pink to resemble the Jaipur Pink. The saree has Chikankari detailing in the border. Its body has breath taking Kaamdaani embroidery work of Golden Trellis circles, that is heavier on the palla and grows smaller and lighter in the rest of the body. KHAYAAL (moodboard): Tulips have captured the mind space of Art connoisseurs alike the World Over. Maybe its alluring form is the reason, or their vibrant colours, but the elegant and beautiful Tulips find themselves as the centrepiece in many works of Art, including Textiles, where they have a dominating presence in some cultures. In Chikankari & other Crafts of Awadh, we wanted these celebrated blossoms to be represented too, as the craft seems to be made for them. Our visit to a Tulip Show in New Delhi, in February of 2024, solidified this dream. In the same vein, Indian artists & portraitures carry a miniature frame to capture portraits of Royals. These two thoughts were married to make two blocks, that carry the thought of Tulip Royale saree. POSHAAK (about the saree): Let us understand this saree's highlight motif, the Tulip Miniature. Inspired by miniature Art style of Indian portrait painters and the allure of the shape of the oval/round miniature frame, we created a block of Miniature Mirror. Inside the mirror, we created our Exclusive, intertwined Tulips motif. This motif has stitches like Orma, Ghaspatti, Shadow, Bijli, amongst others. However, after the Tulip was embroidered, the rest of miniature frame space was filled with very fine quality qasab taar (zari coated thread filament) Jaali, cut by hands! An exemplary feat. This technique gives the saree a 3D Art effect, creating an illusion of colour and depth. The blue shade in each of these Oval Miniature Tulip motifs, shows three distinct shades of same blue due to the clever technique employed in embroidery. The shoulder also has a romantic web of intertwined tulips, again showing different shades of same royal blue, due to slick technique of embroidery! Rest of the saree is covered in Mukaish dots in Gold, along with a border detailing running all through. Old, classic motifs: The Kurta uses old classic motifs of Chikankari, away from the commercial market mores. The Shahi Paan motif was hand carved for Meiraas exclusively using an archival Chikankari work as reference.
Rarest stitches: The kurta features some of the rarest stitches like Qasab taar Jaali, Bijli which are hand cutwork stitches, Orma, Ghaspatti, Phanda, amongst many others to bring the antique art alive.

KHAYAL (moodboard): Paan is a very endearing moodboard of Lucknow, let alone the rest of Bharat. Paan holds not just aesthetic value for us, but it is also considered auspicious due to its various health benefits. The betel leaf is enjoyed amongst all sections of society, and has especially been patronised by the Royals of Lucknow. Shahi Paan, which was akin to Art rolled inside the auspicious Betel Leaf, had the paan makers of that time apply the best of their culinary expertise to create a gilauri that was worthy of the Deity of the temple, which later travelled to Royal courts. This gilauri was especially wrapped with hand beaten pure silver foil called Warq. Our Shahi Paan motif & the kalgi adorning atop it, is an homage to those Royal Beedas of the ancient past that are still in existence. POSHAAK (about the dress): Shahi Paan natural Tussar Silk kurta has a stunning statement back of Paan and Kalgi motif, all archival motifs, that can be seen displayed in National Crafts Museum, New Delhi. Although our motif is much bigger, as that is how hand carving happens now. Laced with very intricate detailing, the stunning motif on the back, is balanced by a beautifully minimal neckline & sleeve line. Jasmine flowers motifs adorn the front of the kurta, making it a regal & subtle piece that is perfect for Festivities & Weddings. The kurta is paired with Glazed Cotton pants in the same shade. To add to this, Noir, is a series we had created a couple of years back, to celebrate a new dimension in Chikankari embroidery - the tone on tone dark. We started this process with Black, & since then have tried Moss Green, and now moving to explore Oxblood shade. This kind of Chikankari is the opposite of classic & ethereal White on White or pastel Tone on Tone. This is rich, decadent, sultry, elegant, mysterious & yet, stately. It features an antique late 19th Century miniature flower vase motif, which also finds its parallel in Amer fort. KHAYAL (mood-board): Our Pauranic Literature & History mentions many great Gods, Demi Gods, Fantastical beasts that are deified, all of whom have birthed the species that exist today on our planet. Airavat, the father of elephants, is described as an 11 trunked, three headed, many tusked gigantic elephant king, that serves as the Mount of Indra, the God of Rain and the King of Devas. Airavat has been a part of many Dev Asur battles, and has a significant presence in our Pauranic lores. The idea to introduce Pauranic creatures in Chikankari, was birthed basis an 18th Century swatch of Sri Lakshmi goddess in Chikankari, housed in National Museum, New Delhi. This, and an informal interviews with private collectors and ancestral artisans confirmed, that Deities of Pauranic lore, were very much part of Chikankari. Taking inspiration from this thought, we now launch our first motif of this kind, Airavat. The one that exudes Power & Intelligence, along with humility & grace! POSHAAK (about the dress): This Eri Silk kurta has one of the most stunning & creative workmanship of Meiraas. The statement back of Airavat features the 11 trunked Elephant King, hand carved in our unit, & brought to life using very fine quality craftsmanship using very extensive and intricate Qasab (Zari) Taar Jaali stitch (inspired from 18th Century Sri Lakshmi swatch in National Crafts Museum, New Delhi). Other stitches like Murri, Ghaaspatti, Shadow complete this stunning, exclusive Jaali motif! The front of the kurta has a Star shaped motif to bring in the celestial connect of Airavat, and those stars have also been done in Jaali stitch and closed using Orma sitch. The neckline has a ghaspatti bel. The base of this stunning Yellow Kurta is handwoven Eri/Ahimsa/Peace Silk, with work done in shades of Rust & Dark Chocolate. This is Quiet Luxury like never before! Just like Airavat & the species he birthed on Earth, this kurta represents Power & Gravity with its conceptual motif work that connects to our history, but also carried forward Ethical & Conscious tradition, with the use of Ahimsa Silk.
