  • Artisan Skill Enhancement: The dresses are embroidered by our Rajnigandha unit, who were used to working on what is termed as "chaalu kaam" or fast moving Chikankari goods. They had never worked on such a skilled piece that helped them invest more creative hours & therefore earn better piece with creative satisfaction
  • Paan Motif: Usage of the much less used Paan Motif in regular work also, so that this motif can be revived.
  • Handloom Chanderi fabric: Making this dress a Handwoven & Handcrafted delight
KHAYAL (Moodboard): "When I was going to design Kalidar Dresses for my portfolio, I started with seeing what was available in Chikankari Kalidar Dresses in general. I was quite disappointed then seeing the spangly and strictly One Time Wear Kalidars that lacked classic appeal and clearly could be worn in very loud gatherings. It is definitely not the style of Meiraas.
Here I would also like to divulge, that at the risk of losing business, I have put my foot down on making “gowns” (whatever that means) and One Time Wears as much as I could. 
For my Kalidar Dresses, I revisited some films from 1960s, where Kalidar Frocks, both Knee Length and Calf Length were worn by vintage actresses. The ease, the charm, the subtlety and the flow - I wanted that. I will especially recall Sadhana’s short one in Mere Mehboob, and Padmini’s beautiful orange one in Mera Naam Joker, in a Qawali song. Smart, easy to dress up and down, laidback and classic.

Through this Everyday Chikankari collection of ours, we want you to step into the oasis of slow summer living from yesteryears that we are all trying to bring back collectively!! POSHAAK (about the product): This beautiful Kurta spells Lucknow with every thread of its being! The neckline and sleeves have a beautiful Murri & Bijli motif detailing with very fine filament work. The shoulder has the classic shadow java (detailing) of the classical Chikankari era of kurtas. The back has a symposium of Lotus flowers strung together in a statement motif, finished with fine shadow embroidery. When you visit the Hazratganj market of Lucknow, you will see most buildings in the colour of a pretty soft yellow and pink, something very unique and very Lucknow. We wanted to use that kind of soft pastel pink for our Kurta. This kurta spells Classic Lucknow like none can. You can shop plain pants to match with the same from Cotton Plain White Pants . This strip is then embroidered with Orma and Murri, along with Phanda in very fine thread work, extensively. This work has also been done on the sleeves. Golden Trellis is our heirloom collection of Mukaish work that was historically done once upon a time in Awadh region, but is not done any more. Golden Trellis is a result of, one of the many research projects we are working upon simultaneously. We know some might not see light of the day (although we firmly believe that everything can be revived if we just have the right patience and the will to keep going), some will prove to be false tales - a mirage of a narrative built for dramatic value and nothing more...but some, like Golden Trellis will be a reality that can be translated to fabric yet again, even if in a small way, or a shadow of its one time glory...at least there will be a start. Golden Trellis is part of the Art & Antiquities Project undertaken by Meiraas. The Sustainability Quotient (TSQ):
  • Heritage Mukaish work re created: This work is known as Gukhru work . It has not been done in India or is extremely rarely done anymore. This is overlapping mesh Jaali work done in Mukaish. Its karigars are not alive now, and some of the karigars who learnt this art do not work in India. This was re created when one of them came on a small visit to his family in India. He has taught some amount of work to our small group of artisans in Lucknow. This work was historically done in Lucknow only. What can be better sustainability than finding out a lost artwork in a craft & helping revive it again to wearable pieces, & most importantly in pieces that can be part of today's Heritage Builders' private collection; this will ensure the craft's continued sustainability.
  • Mukaish Hand Embroidery with proper "ghutaai" - this means Mukaish embroidery has been rubbed using old technique of filling pebbles in a bottle and rubbing on the embroidery, instead of new age roller press method. This one method ensures long lasting Mukaish. In itself Mukaish is more sustainable craft that sequins or "salma sitaara" embroidery, as Mukaish never comes off, maintaining the look of the garment for much longer time.

The back of this dupatta (3rd image) leaves the onlooker startled with the dexterity that would have been employed. It is like "weaving" embroidery within the fabric!
