For those who have not, it is Malai or Khurchan cooked over hours, that is removed from the sides of a paan, when cooled down. The layer of cooked Malai is then decorated with many beautiful condiments - pistachios, almonds, sugar, kewra water - before rolling into a Gilauri. The process just before making the Gilauri is a beautiful sight. This motif with the finest stitches of most beautiful & complex embroidery, and Jaali stitch, reminds us of the Gilauri, just before getting folded and bound into a mouthful of sweet bliss. Jaali is an exceptionally brilliant optical illusion created on fabric by the hands of the karigars, where they replicate the trellis pattern of windows. Windows through which the first rays of sunshine sieve and enter a dark room, and spread their warmth in an alluring pattern. Windows through which the silver glow of a full Moon, enters in a cosmic colour play of calmness. Jaali has more spiritual connect with the artisans than we can think; maybe this is what makes the stitch the high point of Chikankari art. POSHAAK (about the garment): The Antique Ambi motif is a Century plus old motif. The Jaali work on this motif is done using Qasab or Zari filament, which is the toughest level of Jaali stitch done on any fabric. POSHAAK (about the product): Gulaab - Pink has always been an uplifting hue for Indians. The legendary fashion editor of Vogue, Diana Vreeland once commented "Pink is the Navy Blue of India", denoting the significance the hue has for Indians. While Pink is often pigeonholed as feminine in Western parlance, in India the feminine energy has deep significance since ancient period. We equate feminine energy with grace, softness, nurturing ability that can appreciate art and aesthetics. Pink is the colour of Lotus and Rose for us. The feminine energy that gave these qualities was held in high esteem by men of Ancient India too, and hence was embraced by them. This is why Pink is important hue for India. Khayal: Moodboard FISH motif is one of the most celebrated icons of Awadh's heritage & history. The Fish Emblem was sacred to the Nawab royalty of Lucknow & Awadh, and its inspiration looms large on the many architectural landmarks across Awadh, that are now seeing the ravages of time. We have already created an Original Chikankari Motif of the Fish Emblem, we now wanted to create a revival of the iconic symbol in another masterpiece art of Awadh - Daraz applique. The Awadhi Crafts are versatile with hand arts beyond Chikankari; Many crafts like Daraz, Mukaish, Aari, Zardozi have a unique standing of their own, yet are now relegated as an add on to Chikan in their most basic & non creative form. Daraz applique is one of them. Poshaak: (about the dress) This beautiful summer fresh classic kurta has a unique daraz fish motif embroidery along the length of the kurta in the front. This was recreated in reference to an archival work housed in V&A Museum currently. The kurta has black Chikankari embroidery in antique miniature motif (rare to find such small & detailed motifs now) in the front, & Meiraas Exclusive Fish emblem statement motif. The cut of this kurta is single kali, which ensures better fall & grace. It is one of a kind Chikankari kurta, that is sure to become a conversation starter.

Golden Trellis is our heirloom collection of Mukaish work that was historically done once upon a time in Awadh region, but is not done any more. Golden Trellis is a result of, one of the many research projects we are working upon simultaneously. We know some might not see light of the day (although we firmly believe that everything can be revived if we just have the right patience and the will to keep going), some will prove to be false tales - a mirage of a narrative built for dramatic value and nothing more...but some, like Golden Trellis will be a reality that can be translated to fabric yet again, even if in a small way, even if a shadow of its one time glory...at least there will be a start. Golden Trellis is part of the Art & Antiquities Project undertaken by Meiraas. The Sustainability Quotient (TSQ):

Heirloom Full Jaal Mukaish: While Mukaish as a craft has mostly now become an embellishment to Chikankari, we at Meiraas have been trying consistently, to introduce this beautiful craft in all its individual glory, & in more heritage yet functional ways to wear it, to increase the longevity and heirloom value of each piece. Mukaish Jaal Dupattas on Silk are stand alone Heirloom Dupattas, that are versatile to be paired with any Kurta.
Mukaish Hand Embroidery with proper "ghutaai" - this means Mukaish embroidery has been rubbed using old technique of filling pebbles in a bottle and rubbing on the embroidery, instead of new age roller press method. This one method ensures long lasting Mukaish. In itself Mukaish is more sustainable craft that sequins or "salma sitaara" embroidery, as Mukaish never comes off, maintaing the look of the garment for much longer time.
Handspun Handwoven Tussar Silk: Thigh reeled, Handspun, Handwoven soft Tussar Silk from the looms of Bhagalpur, Bihar has been used as a base for these dupattas.

KHAYAL (moodboard): Poetry etched in fabric, Golden Trellis alludes to the once opulent courts of the ancient royalties of India. Trellis is the jaali like window pattern, a signature architecture in heritage monuments of the Golden Era. This museum quality piece of legacy bound, wearable art will a pride for any one who owns it. POSHAAK (about the dupatta): Handloom Tussar Silk Dupatta embroidered beautifully with the Barfi Pattern Mukaish (Chheenta Mukaish and Tiki Mukaish) all over & finished with Gold kingri gota lace detailing (not visible in images) on the daaman of the Dupatta. The dupatta shade is natural beige colour of Tussar yarn. It is a beautiful Heirloom piece that works perfectly well standalone with any Kurta - Chikankari, Banarasi, Plain Tussar, Chanderi, etc. This one dupatta is versatile to dress up and down and adds the elegance that only Heirloom Pieces can. This helps the artisans break away from the monotony of uniform one motif sarees, by giving them variety to work upon. The saree also has a unique one side heavy border, a novelty in Chikankari sarees. The motifs picked are complex & rarely worked upon.
