THE SUSTAINABILITY QUOTIENT (TSQ):
“Named after the classic play by Indian Playwright and author, Mohan Rakesh ji (Aashadh ka Ek Din), this saree reminds of the month of Aashadh, one that waits to be drenched in Monsoon showers. This month falls in Saavan season, yet it is waits for the full glory of Monsoons.
I have always wanted to break the stereotypes associated with Chikankari designs, yet keeping its core of elegance intact.
While practising Chikankari craft is certainly a Sustainable choice to give the heritage craft longevity, it can hardly classify as a ; especially not the way it is practised now, be it small scale sellers or big designers.
From usage of Chemical Indigo for printing, to Acid wash for finishing the garment, Chikankari can hardly be called Eco Conscious.
Our is one step in that direction, and the other step we are slowly and steadily incorporating is (Azo Free already incorporated in full collection). This handloom cotton Chikankari saree is clamped and dyed naturally to present a one of a kind piece that will make inroads into Conscious and Green Fashion.” – Vidhi Rastogi, Head of Design, Meiraas
Poshaak (about the saree): This is Amber Charkha spun (non motorised) & Handwoven soft Cotton from West Bengal. This saree has further been Hand Embroidered in Lucknow Paan/Betel Leaf boota, an endearing motif of Lucknow. Rest of the saree has small floral bootis all over. The saree was then dyed on the base with one natural colour & then clamped on top with another natural colour (Harda and Acacia extracts).
UNDERSTAND NATURAL DYES:
Please read Washing/Ironing instructions in detail to understand Natural Dyes. There will be spots of colour on some parts of the saree, this is a natural procedure of Clamp Dye Technique and adds to the charm of the saree. Every time the rangrez dyes a Natural Dye saree and clamps it, it is like making an Art. It can NEVER BE THE SAME, and it WILL HAVE FLAWS. Buying this saree means, you are metaphorically buying a Canvas of Art to wrap yourself in.
If you miss out on buying this saree and want a repeat order, please bear in mind that the 2nd order will have at least 15%-20% difference than this product. Weather clarity, water clarity, Sun clarity play a big role in the final outcome. This means same saree when made in summers will give different outcome, different in monsoons and different in winters. This IS Wearable Art in the true sense.
P.S: There is no such saree anywhere to be seen in Chikankari. This is one of a kind addition for any Saree Collector or Archivist.
